The holidays can be hell on the wallet and there are plenty of ways to avoid getting into some major debt getting ready. If required, charge it to the credit cards, but make sure that the full payment can be made when the bill comes. Another good way to avoid the holiday debt it to keep control, but that’s easier said than done, so here are some tips to help.
First, instead of waiting until the last minute to start saving money for gifts start saving early. By early, this can mean the day after for the upcoming year or even the 1st of each year. This would mean the cash is there to spend and relying on top credit cards wouldn’t have to be the result.
Create a budget. This is important because if there is no budget the spending can get out of hand. Make sure that there is a budget in place for each person that requires a gift and that there is also an overall budget. This will help overspending from happening.
Create a list. This is one of the easiest ways to shop, especially if everything is already chosen. Simply go into the store, grab what is on the list and get out. Don’t feel the need to buy everyone something expensive, but instead just buy them something they will use or love.
Put the gifts on layaway. This is mostly available at the huge retail stores for the holidays and it is one of the best solutions for purchasing the gifts. Merely choose the gifts, take them to the layaway department and then make the initial down payment. These require bi-weekly or monthly payments and there will be no need to rush for the gifts or to find the cash.
Avoid buying needless items for yourself. There is the whole entire year for that you are spoiled so why do you need to buy something else? Instead, put that money towards gifts for someone else and especially don’t buy for yourself if you need to use the credit cards.
Don’t get drawn in by the big sales. Typically the sales that say they are big ones aren’t really, but they are instead just gimmicks to get people to purchase more. Remember, just get in, buy what is on the list and get back out.
Another good idea is to buy online. This makes it easier to find what is needed and cuts down on the window and impulse shopping. Look at the items online and then go into the many different stores and buy, which is a good way to make the list as well.
Don’t bring the credit cards to the store. This one is the best way to ensure that the credit cards don’t get used. If they aren’t accessible, then they won’t be used. However, if using a credit card is required, then choose the top credit cards and use that one only and stick to that one, which would be an easier way to keep control of the spending.
